Farewell to a Legend: 'Apocalypse Now' and 'The Godfather' Star Robert Duvall Dies at 95
Date: February 16, 2026
Born into a strict naval family, the father wanted his son to become a tough navy officer. But can the one for whom destiny had written the reign of the silver screen be kept in the barracks? Robert Duvall, the man who ruled Hollywood with his acting skills in a seven-decade-long acting career, has passed away at the age of 95. His wife Luciana Pedraza confirmed the news of the legend's death on February 15.
The days of struggle and that friendship in New York
After graduating in 1953, Duvall spent two years in the army and moved to New York. At that time, he had no money in his pocket, and worked as a postal clerk to collect rice and pulses. During those days of struggle, he was accompanied by two other young men—Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman.
Duvall once recalled, "A friend is Gene Hackman. Many years ago, when I broke my pelvis, Hackman gave me the last $300 he had in his pocket." With the help of those three friends, world cinema later found a new height.
The smell of 'napalm' from Oscars
He made his debut in 1962 with a small role like 'Boo Radley' in the film 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. There was no stopping after that. Be it the quiet but sharp-witted advisor 'Tom Hagen' in 'The Godfather' or the war-mad army officer Kilgore in 'Apocalypse Now'—he was unrivaled in every role. In 1983, he won the coveted Oscar for his role as a troubled country singer in the film 'Tender Mercies'.
A 'hero' in the eyes of his colleagues
The entire Hollywood is in mourning after his death. Actor Adam Sandler recalled, "He was incredibly funny and strong as a mountain. He was one of the greatest actors of all time." On the other hand, co-star Viola Davis paid tribute to him, saying, "I always stood in awe of him. As serious as he was as a person, he was as magical."
Robert Duvall is gone, but he leaves behind a legacy of seven decades that will be a textbook for future actors. That rough yet honest man on screen will live on forever through his work.
